We have found that living on or visiting the Yucatan Peninsula is an exciting adventure. While Cancun is a world class tourist destination, it is also the doorway to many other interesting cities and historical sites throughout the entire Yucatan Peninsula.
To the south of Cancun is Puerto Morelos, a typical small fishing village without the commercial development of Cancun. All down the Mayan Riviera are eco-parks and resort hotel complexes. From Playa del Carmen to Tulum, you can see and experience beautiful beaches; great snorkeling and ancient Maya ruins. However, we have found visiting the interior to be one of the most interesting side trips from Cancun. Merida, the capitol of the state of Yucatan, is a fascinating old colonial town founded in 1542. From the beautiful Spanish/French architecture to the wonderful parks and plazas, Merida took us back to another era. The narrow streets, designed for horse and buggy, are lined with multi-colored buildings used for commerce and residences. Sunday in Merida is a celebration of community life. The streets leading to the central plaza area are closed to cars. People flock to the flea markets, parks, and cafes. Live music, dancing, and other entertainment are performed in every plaza. In the midst of all this activity is the Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in the Americas, built in 1500’s. When we entered the church, we felt a sense of peace and reverence.
We especially enjoyed shopping in the city markets and artisan shops, as the prices are much lower than in Cancun. In addition to the embroidered shirts, dresses, and the hammocks produced locally, we found high quality handcrafts from all areas of Mexico.
There are many hotels to choose from in Merida. We found a romantic old colonial home, which has been run, as a hotel for 50 years to be our perfect get-away. The Posada Toledo at the corner of Calle 58 and Calle 57, decorated with antiques, is elegant, quiet, hospitable, and inexpensive. Breakfast, served in the old colonial dining room, was delicious. Merida is definitely on our revisit list. Bye NOTE: We are happy If you want to use this text, but please be so kind and let us know for the respective written permission, Thanks. |
